30/11/2021 Banksy-inspired NFT drives 'seismic' change in art world

Banksy's 2006 piece Warning SignGloss

An NFT has been created of Banksy's 2006 piece Warning Sign

The artist's 2006 piece 'Warning Sign' has been reimagined asanon-fungible token (NFT) - a unique digital certificate.

The holder will also own a 5% equity stake in the original piece.

Media company Gloss - which owns both pieces - said the stake will "solidify" its value and drive "seismic" change in thedigital andart worlds.

NFTs - which was the Collins Dictionary's 2021word of the year- have split opinion since they entered the public consciousness.

'Slight mugs'

Critics have questioned how something digital - such as a meme or viral video - which can be easily copied can retain any value.

Former Christie's auctioneer Charles Allsopp said the concept of buying one made "no sense" and "people who invest in it are slight mugs".

But a Gloss spokeswomandisagreed and claimed that "creatingaNFT with a link to the physicalartworldwillhelp solidify the asset in both the real and digital worlds".

She added:"We want everyone to be able to participate - whether they have traditional art knowledge or crypto knowledge - so they can experience art and NFTs in a brand-new way."

Twin Towers

In the original piece Banksy modified a 'roads diverging' traffic sign to create two vertical lines, representing the Twin Towers in New York.

The anonymous Bristol artist then added a stencil of a small plane to the left of the vertical lines, representing the plane that was deliberately flown into the buildings on 9/11.

Gloss - who like many high-value art owners keep their identity secret - said the piece showed that despite the attack killing almost 3,000 people "ultimately the terrorists were unsuccessful in this mission".

'United people'

This was because "New York and the rest of the country came together to become astronger and more united people".

As well as recreating the physical piece, the Warning Sign NFT completes a 360-degree rotation during which the plane to the left of the building disappears and a flock of doves fly in an upward direction from the buildings.

It said that "each dove has its own unique flight pattern as it leaves the building, representing the uniqueness and individuality of each of the lives lost".

The NFT is currently being auctioned and a percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Fire Department New YorkFoundation which supports the families of firefighters who died on 9/11.

trump 2020
This is a photo i took of my son playing around in one of our cat carriers, redressed to express the concern and damage the continuation of the trump administration could bring to the world in 2020 and beyond. Unlike the majority of my historic work found on opensea, all content was conceived and taken by me, so felt perfect to use as my first piece on Known Origin.

The Scion
A young figure caught in a moment of distraction, aware only ephemerally of his unconscious being, as it engages in psychological and psychedelic layer spaces. His right arm casually cradles a moray eel; the figure is comfortable but not truly aware of the potentials for danger in such negligence. His shirt reads “Bello” in Pokemon style font, harkening back to a childhood straddling the millennial threshold. To his right side, out of the unconscious deep, shrouded alien heads propagate as a fractal totem, each new iteration a more sophisticated rendering of emotional masking over the cold mystery of the greys. As the scion of the Budgie-Sattva, the young man, in his distraction, is also simultaneously aware of higher levels of self discovery. To his left a psychological topology sets beneath the oracle side of an 8 ball ,hovering; its message a purest concept of acceptance. The “Scion” lettering is in 80’s HeMan style bold declaration. The lower right side of the painting is like a hybrid of melon, feathers, and seeds. The crystals in the background bring light; conducted, refracted, reflected, and dispersed, to balance the dark shadow of the figure’s physical body. The aura of the scion succeeds in layers to point, with a finger, and the crown chakra, toward a center of a mandala existing as nigh pure application of strokes, in essence painterly abstraction, but also revealing hints of the Aura of migraine, and the bi-hemispherical nature of the brain–noting concerns of the possibility of inherited mental disease. Yet the flourish of chakra as it sets against that center is robust, active, coherent, and reveling against all fear. Fundamentally, the piece speaks to the activation of one’s potential to begin to “Know Thyself”, and find greater awareness out of the enigmas of the mind–as an inculcated seed given to the rich soil of one’s own birthright.
