We've updated the title of this piece to better reflect Nintendo's response, and apologise for any confusion caused.

Original Story [Thu 3rd Feb, 2022 11:00 GMT]:NFTshave been a hot topic lately, with the most recent drama being Team17'sannouncement(and thencancellation) of its own line of non-fungible tokens.

During a Q&A session that followedNintendo’s latest financial results, one of the questions related to the topic of NFTs and the 'metaverse'.

AnalystDavid Gibson, who was in attendance, reports that Nintendo's response wasn't one of instant dismissal and that its main point of interest would be the metaverse (thanks,VGC):

It's not a particularly surprising reply – after all, Nintendo is in the business of making money and will legitimately be interested in any new technology which enables this – but it's clear that the company is taking a cautious approach to both concepts.

The 'metaverse' is best described as a network of 3D virtual worlds that are focused on social connection, and the term – which was coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novelSnow Crash– has become something of a buzzword in recent times thanks to companies such as Facebook. While the notion of the 'metaverse' is something that's seen as a social tool, many firms are clearly looking at ways they can generate revenue using the concept, and it would seem that Nintendo is no different.

With regards to NFTs, the public response has been quite vitriolic. Alongside Team17, which has arguably done harm to its brand with its aborted NFT plans, voice actorTroy Bakerwithdrew from a deal that would have seen voice samples minted as NFTs, following an overwhelmingly negative reaction online.

Companies such asKonami,Square Enix,SegaandEAhave all expressed interest in NFTs recently, although Sega hasstatedthat it won't pursue the idea if its fans are against them. However, Ubisoft has said that fans currentlydon't understand the benefits of NFTs.

An official transcript and translation of the Q&A call will likely be released in the coming days. Elsewhere on the call,Furukawa reiterated that Switch was "in the middle of its lifecycle"as the console overtook both the Wii and the PlayStation to becomethe fifth best-selling video game console ever.

From The Deep
This moment was captured off the coast of Tahiti. I have been surveying the outer reef of Tahiti for the tiger shark population since 2015, getting to know many of the tiger sharks that frequent that site over the years as they return along their migratory routes. However the site is very sensitive to conditions and difficult to access in certain months due to seasonal changes and being so shallow. This day we decided to go anyways but give it a shot at the drop-off (a depth of about 1,000m) and see if any of the big girls were lurking in the deep. Sure enough she showed up and spent two hours following our boat as we drifted. It wasn’t like on the reef… she didn’t approach along the outskirts of the corals beneath or hugging the waves at the surface. She rose vertical from the deep, seemingly bottomless blue. Appearing out of the darkness. A much different approach and perspective than usually experienced. There's no greater feeling than one of the ocean's apex predators ascending directly to you from the abyss. After hundreds of surveys at the Tahiti site, this dive remains at the front of my mind because of this approach and the deeply endless blue hues. SHARK ID: TT18F SIZE: 3.2 M SEX: FEMALE
