06/05/2022 NFTs were a hot market, but the number of accounts trading has dwindled

The number of accounts trading NFTs has dipped sharply in recent months, new research has found, indicating that the digital art and collectible boom that started in 2021 may finally be cooling off.

Short for nonfungible tokens, NFTs are a kind of digital contract that use blockchains to prove ownership of a particular digital asset, like an image or a GIF. NFT trading exploded into an estimated$40 billion marketlast year.

But areportreleased Thursday by the blockchainanalytics company Chainalysis found a steep decline in NFT trading. Almost a million accounts were actively buying or selling NFTs at the start of the year, but that number has since declined to about 491,000, Chainalysis found.

“NFTs saw explosive growth in 2021, but this growth hasn’t been consistent and has leveled off so far in 2022,” Chainalysis wrote in its report.

While NFTs have been awindfallfor some traders and artists, they’ve also attracted hackers, thieves and scammers. An NBC News investigationlast year found that the largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea, had done little to moderate the problem of people uploading and selling other artists’ works as NFTs. HackersdeliberatelytargetNFT accountsto steal their assets andtake over social media accountsto sell NFTs of their own. An earlier Chainalysis report found that some people repeatedlyauction and purchase their own NFTsin an attempt to drive up their value.

A recent Wall Street Journalinvestigationinto declining NFT sales found that the market prices of several high-profile NFT investments have cratered. An NFT of Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s first tweet, which sold for $2.9 million in March 2021, recently received a high bid of $14,000. Another seller tried to auction a Snoop Dogg-curated NFT for $25.5 million, but received a high bid of $210It’s a shift that some in the digital art space saw coming.

The digital artist Beeple, who made history by auctioning off an NFT for $69.3 million last year, told NBC News in Marchthat that market could be inherently fickle.

But the NFT market is far from dead and continues to attract new entrants. Starbucksannounced Tuesdayit would unveil an NFT loyalty program, and Coinbase, one of the largest U.S. cryptocurrency trading platforms, said Wednesdaythat it will begin allowing all users to try its new NFT exchange.

Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?
"Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?" is dedicated to the mysterious creation of Bitcoin, and acts as the showcase artwork within Javier ArrĂ©s’ exploratory series "Bitcoin, The Origin". "Who is the creator of Bitcoin?" The artist, ArrĂ©s, explores this question, and the feelings of doubt and mystery that accompany it, through his unique artistic language. An unknown, an enigma. It should be remembered that the name Satoshi Nakamoto is a pseudonym of Bitcoin's author or authors and gives us little insight into its true creator. For this Visual Toy, ArrĂ©s uses the signature claw machine, his famous half-operation, to symbolize our collective ignorance and unconfirmed belief: As soon as it has the stuffed animal within its grasp and appears to have solved the puzzle, the animal escapes again, and again. At present, there are three more public and studied possibilities who are either believed to be the creators of the currency or who directly claim the creation of it. It may be all or none of them, yet these three personalities leave us clues which are an important part of this interesting enigma. For this moment, it will remain unknown... In this artwork, ArrĂ©s elevates the claw machine from the apparatus, to an iconic pop art object serving as an important element to the Bitcoin creation narrative. Action is everywhere, with each movement serving an iconographical or metaphorical purpose related directly to cryptocurrency: Various ups and downs, roller coasters, mining points, robot, coins and more speak to a sense of hope, risk, mystery, randomness and possibility of pay out. Hundreds of manically thought out details make this creation one of the artist’s most complex Visual Toys to date. ------- "Bitcoin, The Origin" is a set of two Visual Toys, titled "Who is Satoshi Nakamoto" and "It’s Alive!" which reflect and explore the mystery and enigmas behind the creation of Bitcoin. ArrĂ©s presents these proposals to us in his signature style, full of iconography, fantasy, maniacal animations and a panoply of details (both subtle and overt) which simultaneously fascinate, hypnotize, and narrate this historical milestone through the singular vision of the artist. Through this series, ArrĂ©s freezes a crucial moment of cryptocurrency history, taking a still photo under his vision and turning it into two unique crypto artworks. ---- More info about Javier ArrĂ©s: https://javierarres.com/about.html

The Investor's Dream
The second "Visual Toy" about cryptocurrency and its universe that continues the exclusive collection on this theme. After the first Visual Toy, dedicated to the cryptocurrency itself, this visual toy is the other side of the coin. It represents, as its title tells us, the investor's dream, the current person and his financial hopes. A surreal fantasy of the dreams and longings of every investor, in this case the crypto investor. In this magical, happy and colorful dream, aspirations of all kinds intermingle, both the desire for great benefits, represented in a long animation that shows us a production cycle or series production that ranges from the gastronomic recipe of a two-ingredient cake. Bitcoin slice and Ethereum smoothie, passing through magic, represented in a fairy that transforms the cake into real money, which is sucked into a giant capsule to accumulate it and multiply it. The rest is full of investor aspirations, which appear in their dreams in the form of profits or screens that announce that values are rising steadily, as well as physical possessions, such as the sailboat, the helicopter, homes and other objects or possibilities. A dream full of happiness, fun and hope.
