22/07/2022 OpenSea Debuts Solana NFT Launchpad to Lackluster Demand

OpenSea now has its own minting platform to rival Magic Eden, but launch partner Zoonies appears to be stumbling out the gate.

In an apparent attempt to match rivalMagic Eden’s feature set,OpenSeahas rolled out its new launchpad feature for minting newSolanaNFT projects. However, the leading NFT marketplace’s first drop on the launchpad has been far from a sizzling success from the start.

Zoonies, an alien-themed SolanaNFTprofile picture project, debuted on OpenSea’s new Solana launchpadyesterday, marking the first project to utilize the feature. A launchpad lets collectors mint (i.e. generate and purchase) NFTs during a primary sale, and it’s a feature that Magic Eden andgaming-centric Solana marketplace Fractalhave both had in place for several months.

However, it’s been more than a day since the Zoonies mint began on OpenSea and the project has yet to sell out. As of this writing, less than 5,000 of the 8,888 total Solana NFTs have been minted. The whitelist sale began at 12 p.m. ET on Wednesday, with the public sale commencing at 7 p.m. ET.

Currently, some of the NFTs that have been sold are listed below the 2.5 SOL ($109) public mint price onOpenSea’s secondary marketplace, where the cheapest available items in the collection are listed as low as 1.97 SOL (about $86).

There aren’t other examples yet of Solana NFT launches on OpenSea to compare it to, but Zoonies’ sluggish start isn’t unique in thecurrent NFT bear market. Tiffany Huang, Magic Eden's head of content and marketing, confirmed toDecryptthat some of its recent Solana NFT mints haven't sold out either.

“Given market conditions, we haven’t sold out some of our launchpad collections recently, but place care in the way we’re vetting projects," she said. Huang added that Magic Eden had recentlyupdated its guidelinesto "show our commitment to launching the best projects."

Amid rising demand in the Solana NFT space, high-profile projects likeOkay BearsandTrippin’ Ape Tribehave seen rapid sellouts and significant secondary market action in recent months that has even at times outpaced NFT trading volume on Ethereum. However, not every project is an instant success, and project creators will sometimes cut down the intended supply to secure that “sold out” tag without a lengthy wait.

Zoonies may ultimately go that route as well. On the project’s official Discord server today, administrator Zario wrote, “We are considering cutting the supply and we will make [an] announcement about it soon.”

An NFT is a blockchaintokenthat works like a proof of ownership for an item, including digital goods like profile pictures, artwork, collectibles, and video game items.Ethereumis the leading NFT platform, based on total trading volume and overall value, but Solanahas gained steamas an emerging rival with cheaper fees and a fervent community of collectors.

OpenSea’sentry into the Solana NFT market in Aprilwas noteworthy, given that the Ethereum-centric marketplace is the largest in the overall NFT space. From August 2021 through May, OpenSeaput up billions of dollars worthof NFT trading volume each month, although therecent crypto market crashhas impacted NFT sales and values as well.

However, OpenSea thus far hasn’t made a significant dent in the Solana market, as Magic Eden has routinelymaintained a 90% or greater shareof trading volume in the Solana space, based on public blockchain data. The rival marketplaces’ official Twitter accountstraded barbs and memes yesterdayamid the Zoonies launch, just as they did whenOpenSea first enabled Solana NFT tradingon its platform.

Whether Zoonies ultimately sells out its full 8,888 NFT supply or cuts the total remains to be seen, but we won’t have to wait long to see OpenSea’s next launch.Monkai, an anime-inspired Solana profile picture project, is set to use OpenSea’s launchpad starting on July 26.

Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?
"Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?" is dedicated to the mysterious creation of Bitcoin, and acts as the showcase artwork within Javier ArrĂ©s’ exploratory series "Bitcoin, The Origin". "Who is the creator of Bitcoin?" The artist, ArrĂ©s, explores this question, and the feelings of doubt and mystery that accompany it, through his unique artistic language. An unknown, an enigma. It should be remembered that the name Satoshi Nakamoto is a pseudonym of Bitcoin's author or authors and gives us little insight into its true creator. For this Visual Toy, ArrĂ©s uses the signature claw machine, his famous half-operation, to symbolize our collective ignorance and unconfirmed belief: As soon as it has the stuffed animal within its grasp and appears to have solved the puzzle, the animal escapes again, and again. At present, there are three more public and studied possibilities who are either believed to be the creators of the currency or who directly claim the creation of it. It may be all or none of them, yet these three personalities leave us clues which are an important part of this interesting enigma. For this moment, it will remain unknown... In this artwork, ArrĂ©s elevates the claw machine from the apparatus, to an iconic pop art object serving as an important element to the Bitcoin creation narrative. Action is everywhere, with each movement serving an iconographical or metaphorical purpose related directly to cryptocurrency: Various ups and downs, roller coasters, mining points, robot, coins and more speak to a sense of hope, risk, mystery, randomness and possibility of pay out. Hundreds of manically thought out details make this creation one of the artist’s most complex Visual Toys to date. ------- "Bitcoin, The Origin" is a set of two Visual Toys, titled "Who is Satoshi Nakamoto" and "It’s Alive!" which reflect and explore the mystery and enigmas behind the creation of Bitcoin. ArrĂ©s presents these proposals to us in his signature style, full of iconography, fantasy, maniacal animations and a panoply of details (both subtle and overt) which simultaneously fascinate, hypnotize, and narrate this historical milestone through the singular vision of the artist. Through this series, ArrĂ©s freezes a crucial moment of cryptocurrency history, taking a still photo under his vision and turning it into two unique crypto artworks. ---- More info about Javier ArrĂ©s: https://javierarres.com/about.html
