16/12/2021 Nike's metaverse includes NFT shoes for a virtual world

After spending part of 2021taking shoe customizers to court, Nike is spending its final months of the year staking a claim inthe emerging metaverse.

In October, the sporting goods giant filed trademarks with the U.S. patent office to sell branded sneakers in a virtual world. Last month, the companylaunchedan online game zone onRobloxcalled Nikeland where fans can create an avatar of themselves and play sports in a virtual space. In its latest foray, Nikesaid Monday it has acquired digital collectibles company RTFKT Studios, which will allow the retailer to sellvirtual sneakers that people can use to outfit their online avatars.

"Brands have an incentive to be there because that's where people are and they want to follow them," Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Securities, said of the move by major retailers to start building their presence in the metaverse.

But what is the metaverse, exactly? In general, it describes a network of augmented and virtual reality hubs accessed via smartphones or headsets. Users can also create a digital stand-in to represent them in the virtual world, customizing their avatar for work and play using hats, sunglasses and now even Nike-branded sneakers.

The market for transactions in the metaverse is expected to reach $6.1 billion this year and nearly $42 billion globally by 2026, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. In Nikeland, users can customize their look, display collectibles in a digital showroom and play games.

RTFKT Studios makes non-fungible tokens of sneakers, among other things.Non-fungible tokensare virtual items that use blockchain technology andsmart contractsto assure each item, or asset, is unique and unchangeable. The sneaker NFTs are not tangible items that customers can wear, say, to a grocery store or hair salon in real life. Instead, the shoes will go on the feet of an avatar that walks around a virtual world, such as Nikeland.

RTFKT, pronounced "artifact," was launched in 2020 and made a splash in March when it sold out of a line of real sneakers paired with NFTs in seven minutes andmade$3.1 million in the process. "Since we started, we always looked up to Nike with the goal to create the Nike born on the Metaverse," RTFKT co-founder Benoit Pagottotweetedafter the acquisition was announced.

Nike did not disclose how much it paid for the studio. In astatement, Nike CEO John Donahoe called the purchase another step "to serve athletes and creators at the intersection of sport, creativity, gaming and culture."

It's unclear what specific plans Nike has for its new NFT arm, but Pachter speculated on one possibility: Letting users who bought a new pair of Nikes scan a QR code using their mobile phone so the shoes can be displayed on their avatar in Fortnite or other apps.

Changes is the only thing that hasn’t been changed. From time to space to the thoughts of human beings are constantly changing. I transformed a Silver Gelatin Photogram (a piece of physical photograph made of alternative photographic processes) into a digital image that even can produce endless changes. This is based on the change in my way of seeing the world. It is difficult for individuals to completely isolate themselves from their own inherent culture, this ingrained imprint not only stems from families but also social and historical influences. Besides, the rapid innovation of science and technologies directly drives the world today to inevitably facing collisions and fusions in multiculturalism. Studying classical philosophical text allows me to apply the dialectical method to tease those open questions, and finally ground on my artworks. All things complement each other and balance in the collision. Changes is the key. Isn’t the development of human civilization that come to the present evolve in indistinct ways?
The Scion
A young figure caught in a moment of distraction, aware only ephemerally of his unconscious being, as it engages in psychological and psychedelic layer spaces. His right arm casually cradles a moray eel; the figure is comfortable but not truly aware of the potentials for danger in such negligence. His shirt reads “Bello” in Pokemon style font, harkening back to a childhood straddling the millennial threshold. To his right side, out of the unconscious deep, shrouded alien heads propagate as a fractal totem, each new iteration a more sophisticated rendering of emotional masking over the cold mystery of the greys. As the scion of the Budgie-Sattva, the young man, in his distraction, is also simultaneously aware of higher levels of self discovery. To his left a psychological topology sets beneath the oracle side of an 8 ball ,hovering; its message a purest concept of acceptance. The “Scion” lettering is in 80’s HeMan style bold declaration. The lower right side of the painting is like a hybrid of melon, feathers, and seeds. The crystals in the background bring light; conducted, refracted, reflected, and dispersed, to balance the dark shadow of the figure’s physical body. The aura of the scion succeeds in layers to point, with a finger, and the crown chakra, toward a center of a mandala existing as nigh pure application of strokes, in essence painterly abstraction, but also revealing hints of the Aura of migraine, and the bi-hemispherical nature of the brain–noting concerns of the possibility of inherited mental disease. Yet the flourish of chakra as it sets against that center is robust, active, coherent, and reveling against all fear. Fundamentally, the piece speaks to the activation of one’s potential to begin to “Know Thyself”, and find greater awareness out of the enigmas of the mind–as an inculcated seed given to the rich soil of one’s own birthright.
