21/04/2022 Anna Levytska / Avlevytska NFT Artist Interview

Anna Levytska, artist working in high-contrast black and white. Dark, surreal visions are created mostly with ink on paper but also sometimes in digital techniques.

Where are you from?

I am from Ukraine, ancient and mystical city Kyiv. Currently live in Netherlands because of war.

Can you tell us about your background and what lead you down the path to becoming an artist and ultimately experimenting with NFTs?

As an artist, I usually made illustrations for books, for music bands. Participated in art fairs and exhibitions, selling original physical artworks and prints. I am always interested in new possibilities and experimenting with mediums. When I first heard about NFTs in 2021 it was really exciting as an experiment, new way for art and the artists to grow in digital. When I started, I discovered the magic of new technologies, that confidence it brings and the super supportive community. I even started Dark Art NFT community, looking for like minded people and being encouraged by ultimate support to support artists too. It was really great to be inspired, to inspire to create virtual events like exhibitions for dozens of artists. I plan to continue working on my art both in digital and traditional ways as well as growing community.

When did you mint your first NFT? What platform did you choose and why?

I minted my first NFT on Rarible in March 2021. I knew a little about NFTs – it was easy to register there and to try. Best learning is to try

Cypher::Prophet
Cypher::Prophet is an artwork dedicated to the punk origins of blockchain designed and realized by hackatao and hex6c. In the transposition into images we started from the iconographic canons of the hacker (hoodie, laptop, cryptographic elements) and associated them with the figure of the prophet, thus highlighting the predictive nature of the works of Eric Hughes (Cypherpunk Manifesto, 1988) and Timothy C. May (Crypto Anarchist Manifesto, 1993) as well as of the blockchain inventors Stuart Haber and Scott Stornetta (How to Time-Stamp a Digital Document, The Journal of Cryptography, 1991). It’s not blood, it’s pomegranate juice.
This illustration is a visual experiment with semiotics - the study of signs and symbols, their usage, and interpretation. Here, I used red, black, and white colors to create this visual interplay and interaction between the concepts of sign, context, designed meaning, and intended response. Your eye might be drawn to the red teardrop shape on her face, then interpret that as a drop of blood, according to your everyday visual experience. But if you read my title, it says, "It's not blood, it's pomegranate juice." Similar to René Magritte's surreal painting "The Treachery of Images" a.k.a "This is not a pipe", where the image consists of a drawing of a pipe and a line where Magritte wrote, "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" ("This is not a pipe"), this painting is a visual trick, the writing invites us to recognize that what appears to be a pip, is not really a pipe: it is an illusion, nothing more than paint on a flat surface. Similarly, by making the title "It's not blood, it's pomegranate juice." I want to invite the audience to step out of their conditional interpretation according to the "norms," which are the majority of societal beliefs, and step into something new and whimsical. It is intended to be a playful visual experience for the viewers to experience the tension between words and image, nature and artifice, truth and fiction, reality and surreality.
