22/07/2022 OpenSea Debuts Solana NFT Launchpad to Lackluster Demand

OpenSea now has its own minting platform to rival Magic Eden, but launch partner Zoonies appears to be stumbling out the gate.

In an apparent attempt to match rivalMagic Edenā€™s feature set,OpenSeahas rolled out its new launchpad feature for minting newSolanaNFT projects. However, the leading NFT marketplaceā€™s first drop on the launchpad has been far from a sizzling success from the start.

Zoonies, an alien-themed SolanaNFTprofile picture project, debuted on OpenSeaā€™s new Solana launchpadyesterday, marking the first project to utilize the feature. A launchpad lets collectors mint (i.e. generate and purchase) NFTs during a primary sale, and itā€™s a feature that Magic Eden andgaming-centric Solana marketplace Fractalhave both had in place for several months.

However, itā€™s been more than a day since the Zoonies mint began on OpenSea and the project has yet to sell out. As of this writing, less than 5,000 of the 8,888 total Solana NFTs have been minted. The whitelist sale began at 12 p.m. ET on Wednesday, with the public sale commencing at 7 p.m. ET.

Currently, some of the NFTs that have been sold are listed below the 2.5 SOL ($109) public mint price onOpenSeaā€™s secondary marketplace, where the cheapest available items in the collection are listed as low as 1.97 SOL (about $86).

There arenā€™t other examples yet of Solana NFT launches on OpenSea to compare it to, but Zooniesā€™ sluggish start isnā€™t unique in thecurrent NFT bear market. Tiffany Huang, Magic Eden's head of content and marketing, confirmed toDecryptthat some of its recent Solana NFT mints haven't sold out either.

ā€œGiven market conditions, we havenā€™t sold out some of our launchpad collections recently, but place care in the way weā€™re vetting projects," she said. Huang added that Magic Eden had recentlyupdated its guidelinesto "show our commitment to launching the best projects."

Amid rising demand in the Solana NFT space, high-profile projects likeOkay BearsandTrippinā€™ Ape Tribehave seen rapid sellouts and significant secondary market action in recent months that has even at times outpaced NFT trading volume on Ethereum. However, not every project is an instant success, and project creators will sometimes cut down the intended supply to secure that ā€œsold outā€ tag without a lengthy wait.

Zoonies may ultimately go that route as well. On the projectā€™s official Discord server today, administrator Zario wrote, ā€œWe are considering cutting the supply and we will make [an] announcement about it soon.ā€

An NFT is a blockchaintokenthat works like a proof of ownership for an item, including digital goods like profile pictures, artwork, collectibles, and video game items.Ethereumis the leading NFT platform, based on total trading volume and overall value, but Solanahas gained steamas an emerging rival with cheaper fees and a fervent community of collectors.

OpenSeaā€™sentry into the Solana NFT market in Aprilwas noteworthy, given that the Ethereum-centric marketplace is the largest in the overall NFT space. From August 2021 through May, OpenSeaput up billions of dollars worthof NFT trading volume each month, although therecent crypto market crashhas impacted NFT sales and values as well.

However, OpenSea thus far hasnā€™t made a significant dent in the Solana market, as Magic Eden has routinelymaintained a 90% or greater shareof trading volume in the Solana space, based on public blockchain data. The rival marketplacesā€™ official Twitter accountstraded barbs and memes yesterdayamid the Zoonies launch, just as they did whenOpenSea first enabled Solana NFT tradingon its platform.

Whether Zoonies ultimately sells out its full 8,888 NFT supply or cuts the total remains to be seen, but we wonā€™t have to wait long to see OpenSeaā€™s next launch.Monkai, an anime-inspired Solana profile picture project, is set to use OpenSeaā€™s launchpad starting on July 26.

The Scion
A young figure caught in a moment of distraction, aware only ephemerally of his unconscious being, as it engages in psychological and psychedelic layer spaces. His right arm casually cradles a moray eel; the figure is comfortable but not truly aware of the potentials for danger in such negligence. His shirt reads ā€œBelloā€ in Pokemon style font, harkening back to a childhood straddling the millennial threshold. To his right side, out of the unconscious deep, shrouded alien heads propagate as a fractal totem, each new iteration a more sophisticated rendering of emotional masking over the cold mystery of the greys. As the scion of the Budgie-Sattva, the young man, in his distraction, is also simultaneously aware of higher levels of self discovery. To his left a psychological topology sets beneath the oracle side of an 8 ball ,hovering; its message a purest concept of acceptance. The ā€œScionā€ lettering is in 80ā€™s HeMan style bold declaration. The lower right side of the painting is like a hybrid of melon, feathers, and seeds. The crystals in the background bring light; conducted, refracted, reflected, and dispersed, to balance the dark shadow of the figureā€™s physical body. The aura of the scion succeeds in layers to point, with a finger, and the crown chakra, toward a center of a mandala existing as nigh pure application of strokes, in essence painterly abstraction, but also revealing hints of the Aura of migraine, and the bi-hemispherical nature of the brainā€“noting concerns of the possibility of inherited mental disease. Yet the flourish of chakra as it sets against that center is robust, active, coherent, and reveling against all fear. Fundamentally, the piece speaks to the activation of oneā€™s potential to begin to ā€œKnow Thyselfā€, and find greater awareness out of the enigmas of the mindā€“as an inculcated seed given to the rich soil of oneā€™s own birthright.

The Harvest
An anthropomorphic figure stands, wide eyed, staring at the viewer; its body masculine, muscular, and humanoid. Its ā€œmindā€ dissociates into a conglomerate of structures resembling feathers, grain, teethā€“as well as a radial flower ā€œnodeā€, casting linear rays throughout the composition. To his left, a vat of bodies gesture and writhe in a kind of amniotic soup, attended by a video game robot. The bot's red display reads ā€œuWuā€. Behind the robot and filling the left side of the composition is an archaic figure composed of a variety of vintage objects and symbols. Among them are a hardbound book with ancient cuneiform scripts, indicating barley, beer, bread, ox, house, and sky, behind which is a grimacing, salivating jagged toothed maw; and an old Commodore floppy drive. The figureā€™s head tilts toward an illuminated crescent moon, suggesting the Egyptian Sacred Bull. The archaic figure is composed of a variety of mutating cells, which shift in color, and pattern; eventually breaking free into an ephemeral broadcast of bubbles which move across the background. The work came into being against a psychological introspection, which included associations to pop culture such as alien abduction and pod people, as well as quite a bit of reflection on grains as a symbol of civilization, agriculture, sustenance, life, and imbibing (mainly whiskies).
