NEW DIRECTORS HAVE BEEN GETTING HIRED AT MAJOR ART MUSEUMS in the United States at a rapid pace recently. The latest: Ngaire Blankenberg has been tapped to lead the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C. Blankenberg, a veteran museum consultant, takes the place of Gus Casely-Hayford, who was picked for the job in 2017 and was named the inaugural director of the V&A East in London in 2019. Blankenberg, who was principal consultant from 2008 to 2016 at Lord Cultural Resources (an adviser to arts and cultural institutions), said in a statement, “Museums are institutions that carry a lot of systemic baggage from their colonial origins, but they are vital public spaces to reconsider how we connect and contend with one another and the planet, and where we can redefine, heal, and reconcile.”

THE ART MUSEUMS JUST KEEP COMING IN SOUTH KOREA. They have been opening at a rapid pace over the past decade, and now another is on the way. The nation’s culture ministry said today that it intends to build one for the more than 23,000 works donated to the state earlier this year by the family of the late Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee, the Korea Herald reports. Authorities have identified two possible sites in Seoul, in a blow to politicians throughout the country who had been lobbying to host the museum, a likely tourist draw. A database of the works will be unveiled in 2023.

The Smithsonian’s Archives for American Art has acquired the archives of land artist Nancy Holt, which includes more than 50,000 items, including plans for unbuilt pieces. The Holt-Smithson Foundation, which will maintain joint ownership of the materials, hopes to realize those works. [The Art Newspaper]

Harvard University’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology said that it is working to repatriate a tomahawk that once belonged to the Native American civil rights leader Chief Standing Bear to the Ponca Tribe in Nebraska and Oklahoma. [Associated Press]

Did the art historian Curt Glaser sell his art collection under duress, after being fired in 1933 as director of the Berlin State Art Library because he was Jewish? In Romania, Ambulance for Monuments workers “race around the Balkan country, giving critical care to as many historical buildings as possible that are in an advanced state of decay before it’s too late,” Stephen McGrath reports. Founded by architect Eugen Vaida in 2016, it has so far worked on more than 50 structures. [Associated Press]

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami has acquired CryptoPunk 5293 (2017)—one of 10,000 digital portraits made by Larva Labs—and will present it this summer. It was a donation from Eduardo Burillo, an ICA trustee. [Press Release/ArtDaily]

Looking a bit like a CryptoPunk, a blue-haired Damien Hirst unveiled his new “Cherry Blossom” paintings at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, and whatever anyone thinks of the ebullient, thickly painted works, he said that one person is likely to be happy with them: his mother. Hirst told the Guardian, “When I was making the animals in formaldehyde, she said, ‘Oh, there’s enough horror in the world, can’t you do paintings of flowers?’ And I think, my God, it’s taken me until I’m 55 before I can please her.” [The Guardian]

The Kicker

AN AVANT-GARDE TREASURE HUNT IS UNDERWAY in Orkney, Scotland. The musician Erland Cooper has buried the only copy of his latest album (a tape reel) in the area, which inspired the work. Calling the project “kind of a collaboration with the landscape” in a BBC News interview , Cooper said he will release the record once it is discovered (or in three years) just as it is, decomposition and all. To dissuade people from disturbing the natural environment and archaeological sites, he said that he has marked the burial spot with a smooth rock carved by the artist Jo Sweeting. “Only if you find this stone, should you dig at all,” he said.

Alex in Wonderland
A figure, Alex, stands mostly naked in the midst of a physical and psychological maelstrom. He is clad only in nostalgic 80’s era socks, on a tenuous island between active waters and a variety of shark denizens. Sharks on the right side of the image are all beached, including a shark with a quartz crystal snout, an orange shark wrapped in a life buoy, and a shark further in the distance wearing an 80’s style shirt with the number “88”. On the left side is the largest shark, wearing bright glossy red lipstick and brandishing prominent teeth with braces. She is cordoned off from the figure by a roped float divider, and within her thought bubble is a warning symbol. Behind the figure, hovering in the air, are Grey aliens emerging from the distance, out of a series of elliptical UFO shaped interdimensional membranes. The Greys take on the visual form of spermazoa ostensibly impregnating the interdimensional thresholds. As is typical, these Greys inhabit a zone just behind the unconscious topology of Alex’s dissociative mind. Though Alex’s bottom half is representative, his top half mutates into a psychological cornucopia. In a manner akin to “Auto-Erotic Sphinx”, a predecessor work, the figure has self suctioned—an act of sensual infatuation, enjoyment, and exploration. Upward exists the figure’s primary conscious eye, adorned with a revolutionary beret emblazoned with a Bitcoin badge. The figure’s summit features the nose of a fighter jet facing off against video game Bullet Bills, one of whom is marked by a communist North Korean star. A cropped section of a UFO observes the contest. Alex’s mind branches both left and right. To the left is more singular embodied consciousness, manifesting two eyes and a Ganesh trunk grasping crayons. The right branch dissociates upward diagonally, emerging into an array of eyes, faces, teeth, tail, a unicorn horn, and much more—all of which participate in expressing his unconscious being; a democracy of psychic factions representing thought impressions and associations. All illumination and darkness– fernal, infernal, high consciousness and corporeal underbelly–reside in this realm. In the distance are relatively languid, light clouds, and against the firmament hovers a colossal distant eye peering over the scene and far beyond. This painting possesses underlying genetic traits with previous works such as “Auto-Erotic Sphinx with Toys”, “Dionysus”, and “Fuku-Shiva”. The work serves also as a nod to an earlier period of art inspiration during late teens and early twenties— born out of the nakedness, vulnerability, curiosity, and wonder inherent to coming of age and all subsequent psychedelic revelation.
Fuku-Shiva
The term “Fuku” refers to fortune or good luck. “Shiva” refers to the Hindu deity who represents strongly polar qualities, both severe and delicate. On a beach inspired by adventures on Phi Phi island in Thailand, three youths cavort. Two are representational figures and the third is psychologically rendered. A dynamic relationship ensues between the triad; a reciprocity of active and passive states. The boy on the right engages in maneuvers of evasion, defense, and is dressed in a speedo which reiterates the colors and symbolism of the caution tape on the left and upper right frame of the composition. In concurrent reaction the psychedelic figure shoots out a rocket powered paper airplane. The nude boy seated in the froth and sand approaches in passive repose, and is met with active attention but equal physical reserve by the psychedelic being. Perhaps the most naked figure is also the least representational. Looming large, dynamic, and active, it engages its companions playfully. Various symbols interject into the otherwise naturalistic scene, most notably a beach ball and two contaminated barrels nested in the sand. The upright barrel reads “FukuShima” in Kanji. The barrel laying down reads “Dharma”. To the left the scene is bounded by caution tape, reiterating the danger of the nuclear waste while also hosting alien archetypes, whose presence, as is the nature of these entities, runs up and just behind the consciousness of the psychedelic figure’s eggshell-like skull.

The Harvest
An anthropomorphic figure stands, wide eyed, staring at the viewer; its body masculine, muscular, and humanoid. Its “mind” dissociates into a conglomerate of structures resembling feathers, grain, teeth–as well as a radial flower “node”, casting linear rays throughout the composition. To his left, a vat of bodies gesture and writhe in a kind of amniotic soup, attended by a video game robot. The bot's red display reads “uWu”. Behind the robot and filling the left side of the composition is an archaic figure composed of a variety of vintage objects and symbols. Among them are a hardbound book with ancient cuneiform scripts, indicating barley, beer, bread, ox, house, and sky, behind which is a grimacing, salivating jagged toothed maw; and an old Commodore floppy drive. The figure’s head tilts toward an illuminated crescent moon, suggesting the Egyptian Sacred Bull. The archaic figure is composed of a variety of mutating cells, which shift in color, and pattern; eventually breaking free into an ephemeral broadcast of bubbles which move across the background. The work came into being against a psychological introspection, which included associations to pop culture such as alien abduction and pod people, as well as quite a bit of reflection on grains as a symbol of civilization, agriculture, sustenance, life, and imbibing (mainly whiskies).
